About counselling

Sometimes a little help is needed

The first question that can come up is what counselling means and who can benefit from counselling services. Counselling is a form of talking therapy and this includes a trained and qualified therapist (counsellor) to listen to you and explore ways to work on your issues. Issues can involve many things including daily hassles, stress, low mood or relationship problems alongside depression, anxiety, grief, eating disorder, abuse or trauma. Also, sometimes people face a specific problem or feel stuck. This list is not exhaustive. So anyone and everyone can benefit from counselling at least at some point in their lives. Counselling also provides space to grow and find the best potential in a non-judgemental and empathic way, so it’s a great tool for self-development and gaining more self-awareness. Although, counselling is not about providing advice directly, but more about exploring ways to manage different situations and find the best way for you.

About me as a therapist

I’ve always had an interest in human behaviour and desire to help people, also, to understand the underlying mechanisms of different emotions, drives or mental health problems. Prior to my counselling journey, I worked in health and social care for several years then continued volunteering at Redlands Counselling and Training Agency working with adults with common mental health issues. I also worked for a local drug and alcohol agency with a range of people and a variety of issues. I am fully insured, hold an enhanced DBS certificate and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

How do I work?

My practice

I work in an integrated way, including person-centred therapy, transactional analysis and Gestalt therapy (you can read more about these in the resources tab). In your therapy, you are the driver and I guide your driving gently. I offer a non-judgemental and safe place where you can explore yourself and your issues whether you wish to work remotely or in-person. I also strongly believe and work in a biopsychosocial approach when I work with clients (with individuals the biological, social and psychological factors all need to be considered and looked at). Sessions can be short or long-term (open-ended) depending on your needs with regular reviews, also, a flexible approach is available with the frequency of the sessions.

Testimonals

"I really enjoy working with Alexandra, and I feel very calm & comfortable from her demeanour. She asks questions that make me reflect and come to realisations that I wouldn't have without her. She has been very helpful, listening, and a great support to me in a period when I really needed a therapist on the sideline." - Ann

"We are just a few weeks in and with my issues I think we have a while to go yet but my initial hesitation has completely gone and I look forward to our sessions. Alexandra is a good fit for me, she is empathetic, kindly but professional, and responds to me in a very timely manner too so I have been able to relax into the process." - Deliah

"Alexandra is a great listener and provides practical advice. I highly recommend her as a therapist" - Bea
